It contains a short guide with all of the rulings followed by longer Teshuvot explaining these positions. Over 270 Attend CYIR Gush Katif Commemoration Program; Presentations Now Available Online

While it is no coincidence the the expulsion from Gush Katif and the Northern Shomron took place immediately after Tisha B'Av 3 years ago, it seemed very appropriate to hold a commemoration of the disengagement during the 9 days, a time of retrospection, increased mourning and thoughts of all of the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people. So it came as no surprise that over 270 people attended the CYIR Gush Katif Commemoration program, held as and in conjunction with the Jerusalem Great Synagogue.

Presenters included Rabbi Jeffrey Bienenfeld, Rabbi Sholom Gold, Anita Tucker, Aviva Pinchuk, Rabbi Yossef Elnekave and Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Rimon. Each speaker brought to the forefront their unique perspective of what life in Gush Katif used to be, the horrors of the expulsion, and where the refugees stand today.

All of the presentations are available free of charge to listen to/download by clicking this link.

Back to School with the Children of SDEROT and GUSH KATIF

As summer vacation comes to a close, the furthest thing from anyone's mind is the start of the nextPicture of actual contents of the Pencil Case - Join the Campaign Today!!! school year.

However, for the some 3000 elementary school students from the city of Sderot and the ex-Gush Katif communities, going back to school can be a source of major financial stress.

CYIR: Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel invites you to join us in its "Back to School with the Children of Sderot and Gush Katif" campaign. It’s very simple: we want to place a fully stocked pencil case filled with writing implements and other “goodies” on each child’s desk as a “welcome back” message of solidarity. Our aim is that when these students arrive in their classrooms for the first day of school on September 1, there will be a pencil case waiting for them on their desk.

Help put a smile on the faces of these students that have gone through so much. The cost of each pencil case is $10 (or NIS 35) and we need to reach a total of 3000 pencil cases to ensure that every student receives this small but significant token of the oneness of our people.

Donations can be made in US Dollars via PayPal for $10 USD by clicking this link.

Donations can be made in Israeli Shekels via PayPal for NIS 35 by clicking this link.

CYIR to Sponsor Blood Drive and YESHA Fair Monday, August 25 at Heichal Shlomo, Jerusalem

CYIR: Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel and the Worldwide Young Israel Movement are proud to present 2 unique events on 1 great afternoon/evening in an exclusive Jerusalem location:

AFMDA Blood Drive: Young Israel will once again be co-sponsoring a blood drive in conjunction with American Friends of Magen David Adom (AFMDA). Summer is a season marked by increased demand and decreased supply of blood and every pint of blood can save up to three lives. Young Israel is playing a key role in helping AFMDA reach its goal of total units donated in 2008. For information as to who is eligible, please contact Jonathan Feldstein: 057-761-4220; jfeldstein@afmda.org

MEGA YESHA FAIR: The YESHA Fair was created to enable the farmers, artisans and businesses of YESHA to have free access to larger Israeli cities to bring their wares to the public. The YESHA Fair allows vendors to sell their products and make an honest, decent living. It also enables customers to show their support by buying their products (rather than merely giving tzedaka).
Young Israel is proud to underwrite the costs for this event.

Monday, August 25, 2008/24 Menachem Av 5768,
4-9 PM
Heichal Shlomo, 58 King George Street, Jerusalem

Young Israel and AIAC Call on All Eligible One Year Students to Register to Vote in US Presidential Elections

The American Israeli Action Coalition (AIAC), an Israeli non-profit organization founded to activate the 250,000 US citizens in Israel to speak out on joint American/Israeli concerns, joined the Worldwide Young Israel Movement in calling on all US students who plan to be in Israel during the upcoming US Presidential Election to register to vote and apply for an absentee ballot.

“Over 7,000 young men and women from the United States will spend this coming academic year in Israel” said Shlomo Z. Mostofsky, President of the National Council of Young Israel. “It is incumbent upon them to exercise their rights as US citizens to play an active role in the US election by registering to vote and receiving an absentee ballot.”

Harvey Schwartz, Chairman of the Israeli-based AIAC, added that “We would like our visiting American students to serve as an example to the more than 100,000 eligible American-Israeli voters to play a significant role in an election that will have a considerable impact on the future of Israel, the United States, and the world..."

Focus on CYIR Founders Awardees: Rabbi James Gordon; DATE OF BRUNCH CHANGED TO FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19/19 ELUL!!!

Rabbi James Gordon

Hailing from Gloucster, MA, Rabbi James Gordon’s history with the Young Israel movement dates back to 1962 when he assumed the position of spiritual leader of Young Israel of Oak Woods, a section of Detroit, MI. His impact on the Detroit community stretched even further as he was a co-founder of the Akiva Hebrew Day School, vice president of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, and president of Religious Zionists of Detroit. On the college campus level, Rabbi Gordon initiated the first kosher dining program at the University of Michigan, which continues until this day.

Having made Aliyah in 1985, Rabbi Gordon was a guiding force behind Shalshelet – an innovative pre-marital counseling service for young couples of all backgrounds. As supervisor of the RCA in Israel’s Instruction Program for Conversion, Rabbi Gordon’s model was adopted by the Government of Israel for Russian immigrants.

It is precisely for his dedication and decades of service to the Young Israel movement that CYIR will honor Rabbi Gordon with the presentation of a Founders Award at its 18th Anniversary Celebration.

THIS JUST IN: PROFESSOR YAAKOV NEEMAN, FORMER MINISTER OF FINANCE, WILL BE OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE CELEBRATION - WHICH HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2008.

Pomeranz Booksellers of Jerusalem - Weekly Selection

"If anyone wants to know what has gone wrong with Orthodoxy today you only need to read “The Quest For Authenticity: The Thought of Reb Simcha Bunim” published by Urim. In it he describes the “court” of Peshischa in Poland under its leading eighteenth and nineteenth century charismatic leaders, Yehudi, Simcha Bunim and Menachem Mendel of Kotzk, charismatic, fiercely honest individuals who were opposed to conformity. Sadly the rest of the Hassidic world closed ranks against them. The movement was suppressed by the miracle working, rebbe worshipping, hereditary, reactionary, pseudo mystical Hassidism that now dominates much of Judaism. They didn't much like Simcha Bunim either because he had trained as a chemist, supported himself, had travelled, spoke many languages and, crime of crimes, wore normal western dress....
