| RABBIS MEYER FENDEL, SHOLOM GOLD OF YOUNG ISRAEL OF WEST HEMPSTEAD TO BE HONORED AS "CYIR FOUNDERS" ON SEPTEMBER 5 IN JERUSALEM |
CYIR: Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel, a non-profit organization which provides programming to various Israeli demographic groups, is commemorating 18 years of service to the citizens and State of Israel. Our kickoff event for this celebratory year will take place Friday morning, September 5, 2008 at the Ramada Hotel in Jerusalem. At this brunch, we will be honoring founders of our movement, leaders of our current programs, and builders of Israel.
As luck would have it, there are 2 honorees that have a strong history and affiliation with Young Israel of West Hempstead – RABBI MEYER FENDEL AND RABBI SHOLOM GOLD. While we are sure that you are familiar with their respective roles in the West Hempstead community, allow us to explain their important and significant contributions to CYIR:
After serving with distinction as Young Israel of West Hempstead’s founding spiritual leader and founding dean of HANC, Rabbi Meyer Fendel has made his mark on Israel by serving as associate dean of Midreshet Moriah and director of Camp N’vei Ashdod. His attachment to and love for the Young Israel movement continues to this day as one of CYIR’s Vice Presidents, helping to shape the organization’s activities and efforts to reach out to Anglo-Israeli rabbis. In his “spare” time, Rabbi Fendel and his wife Goldie actively campaign for a number of causes including Yeshivat Hesder in Sderot.
Rabbi Sholom Gold’s association with the Young Israel movement has continued long since he made Aliyah with his wife, Bayla. As founding rabbi of Young Israel Kehilat Zichron Yosef of Har Nof, Jerusalem and as a founding board member of CYIR, Rabbi Gold put Young Israel on the map in the Holy Land. To this day, he actively serves on the CYIR executive board and is often called upon by Diaspora rabbis and leaders for his unique “take” on current Israel Issues. Rabbi Gold also serves as dean of the Avrom Silver Jerusalem College for Adults of the Orthodox Union’s Israel Center.
Now standing at the threshold of Israel’s 60th anniversary, the Young Israel movement, with 150 synagogues in North America and over 60 in Israel, places significant emphasis on serving some of Israel’s most underserviced populations, such as the deaf and hearing impaired, those entangled in unwanted marriages, counseling of immigrants, training community rabbis, and the like.
Please take this opportunity to pay tribute to Rabbi Fendel, Rabbi Gold and our other honorees by placing an advertisement in our commemorative journal. We thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely yours,
Rabbi Chaim Wasserman Rabbi Jeffrey Bienenfeld Rabbi Michael K. Strick
